ITINERUM
Resurgence
Demons Records
“Resurgence” is the superb new album just about to be unveiled by Basque based symphonic and gothic metal band ITINERUM. Following on from their 2022 debut “Dream And Fly”, this sophomore outing from ITINERUM certainly stands out from the crowd and serves to cement the Spaniards rightful place in the recent “Resurgence” of this much-loved and coveted genre.
For those of you who love the sound of modern metal there are outstanding tracks like the synthesiser infused “Till Dawn Do Us Apart” with its crisp and pulsating riff, “Inner War” with its big healthy pinch of eastern spice, or maybe the pumped-up power metal classic “Under Rain” ticking every single box that your heart desires. These types of songs deliver everything that you would expect from this new wave of bands where the lines between the different metal genres are often blurred or crossed at will.
For the purists amongst you or the connoisseurs more traditional styles the lovely and heartfelt “Inequality” is there to cordially remind you of exactly why you fell in love with this genre in the first place as we take a brief yet enthralling time machine trip back a couple of decades or so to the very birth of symphonic metal. Along similar lines the equally stirring “Askja” also has a bit of a retro feel about it too, although this time out there is a definite folk leaning thread running right through the core of this banger.
Darker, heavier and gothically influenced tracks like “My Serenity” with its anguish laden guitar playing or the heart pounding and sorrowful “Mother Of Chaos” are powerful, emotionally charged songs that will strike a real chord with the psyche of the listener. Whereas serenely beautiful songs like “The Nobodies” and “Symphony Of Rage” conjure up a vibrant, rich and deep wall of sound using heavy fuzzy riffs and melancholy vocals skilfully blended to absolute perfection. These gorgeous songs form the heart and soul of the entire album.
ITINERUM may not be pioneers of the genre, but they are most definitely trail blazers in a fast growing and exciting new group of upcoming symphonic gothic metal bands. Albums like “Resurgence” prove that this metal genre is very much alive and kicking in 2025 with a refreshing new wave of excellent talent coming through to fruition just as the old guard slowly fade away.
Every single track on “Resurgence” holds its own individually and should therefore be considered a very fine piece of musical art on its own merit, so to coin that age old phrase in my opinion “Resurgence” is “All Killer, No Filler!”
Highly recommended!
