From The Depths I Cried

Sometimes, slow and brooding is what you need on a cold, dark, and dank October evening. Something to fill your horror-loving and dark-forest-floor craving soul. I find myself reaching for darker coffee, heavier jackets, and doomier metal during this time of year. Luckily, I don’t have to reach very far, as Finland’s INFIRMUM is releasing their new album From The Depths I Cried on September 27th

THE BAND

Formed in Jyväskylä in 2019, INFIRMUM has one full-length and one EP to their name. Specializing in the darker and more goth-centric realm of metal, they have perfected the art of sounding evil and beautiful simultaneously (not an easy feat!). The septet of severe savagery is rounded out by Sabine Blodwin’s beautiful soaring vocals, Taka Eliel performing double duty on bass and brutal growls, Timo Solonen and Joonas Siikavirta wailing on guitars, Erna Siikavirta on keyboards, Elya charming us on the cello, and Hanna-Leena Lassila keeping the heartbeat alive on drums.

THE ALBUM

The seven-track album from the seven-member band brings out the quality of beauty and destruction on each track. Ranging from the heart-wrenching Burn to the ethereal Peace, this album spans the entire spectrum of emotion while not overstaying its welcome.

A standout track for this reviewer includes Icamiabas which utilizes indigenous drum beats over the amazing growls of Taka in the beginning of the track, and grows to this emotional and huge wall of sound that legitimately made my headphones vibrate my hair to standing directly up. Another amazing piece that will stick with you is the opener Pact. This track just oozes with funerial imagery and doom-laden vibes.

Something that I feel is necessary to point out is INFIRMUM’s ability to paint a picture with their music. One of my favorite qualities about metal music in general is how I can see a movie in my head while jamming out. This album instantly transports the listener to a world of sorrow and decaying wildlife. It has the most amazing sense of dread that perfectly fits with the season ahead.

THE VERDICT

This album was an absolute treat to review. The amazing sonic representation of trepidation and sorrow comes through so clearly that I just want to keep it on repeat. From The Depths I Cried is out independently on September 27th. Check it out!
