The year 2024 has brought us many excellent female fronted hard rock and metal albums and at the last minute one more could fall on your doormat. If you like top-class melodic power metal then you just cannot ignore SORCERESS OF SIN‘s new album “Ennea”, out on December 20 via Wormholedeath. We had a little talk with singer Lisa Skinner about what could become one of the best albums in the genre for 2024.

I’ve tried to open your official website for some information, but it wasn’t there. Are you building a new one or don’t you need one?
“We used to have a website, but currently we are looking to revamp and update it with what the band has been up to so far. We definitely will have one! Having said that, we live in an era where social media has transformed the way we connect with the world. Platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have revolutionized the way we interact with our fans. Unlike traditional websites, social media offers a more direct and immediate channel for feedback and engagement. By fostering real-time conversations, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses, and responding to comments and messages, we can build stronger relationships with our audience and create a more authentic and personal connection.”SORCERESS OF SIN are set to release a new album, “Ennea”, on December 20th. Their third album in four years! For those who haven’t heard the first two, “Mirrored Revenged” and “Constantine”, what did they miss?
“We feel that the first two albums had their own unique twist on melodic power metal differing from that of “Ennea” although all three albums combine a classic feel without obvious influence. Our first album is filled with punchy and strong lyrics over authorative melodic power riffs and beats. The second album is more of a concept album entering the realms of mythology and had some lengthy but epic melodic and symphonic additions. They both lead the way in to the concept of this, our third album.”“Ennea” is the first album released on Wormholedeath. How did you end up with them?
“We had been in conversation with various representatives who had approached us from Wormholedeath since the release of our first album. On discussion with them during the build up to the release of this album we felt that the whole thing just felt right at this time. They have always been very supportive of us and we are very grateful to them for their belief and support system.”
The cover art and the song titles on “Ennea” already suggest that we are dealing with a concept album and you just confirmed it. What is the concept?
“The overriding concept is a build on the previous album and is relatable to Greek mythology and specifically to the ‘Council Of Nine’. Each track is a poetic tribute to each God on the Council telling of strengths, weak- nesses, the wars and the relations.
Wormholedeath have used the description: ‘A fusion of epic story- telling and heavy metal where the Gods and the mortals collide.’ We consider this an accurate (and flattering) description of this album’s concept.”
Let’s pick out some highlights from “Ennea”. Although the album is one big ecstasy, the ballad “The Quest” with a length of 7:29 minutes is a real killer. It takes you back to the 1980s where such beauties were more rule than exception. Are you inspired by bands from that period?“Thank you, that is very kind! Personally, I am a big fan of epic 80’s ballads and vocally I lean towards bands such as Journey, Foreigner and The Scorpions when it comes to the ballads. As full albums we are very much inspired by 80’s bands such as Helloween and Warlock and we have a underlying inspiration in our music from bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest too, although we hope we achieve a unique ‘SORCERESS OF SIN’ style and don’t actually sound like any other bands.”
Your guitarist Constantine Kanakis is extremely good. His razor sharp solos are very impressive. Where did you pick him up?
“That’s sweet! As a band we wholeheartedly agree and it was a very lucky and chance finding… Or maybe it was fate all along! We actually met a few years prior to starting the first album and I loved the way Constantine played and wrote music and was inspired by him from day one. But we weren’t great with the moving technology at that time and although we started to write together we really didn’t know how to proceed forward with our ideas. As Covid hit, we began to experiment and learn how to put together those ideas Constantine and I had and following a further chance and fateful meeting with our producer Tom Maclean of Twelve-Tone Studios it just brought the whole thing together incredibly quickly and our writing and production format was found.”
The second outstanding track for me is “Trickster”. How on earth are you going to do this one live with so many lyrics and high pitches?
“That to me is quite a funny question and interesting that you might see it that way! We also love the track “Trickster” and it went straight in to our ‘live’ set as soon as it was written. I am so pleased you enjoy it as a track. We have been performing it ‘live’ for some time now and I have personally and honestly never even considered it to be difficult lyrically or of an unnaturally high pitch. I can only suggest that I feel more comfortable in that angry, fast, high and punchy range of track, especially in a ‘live’ setting. On consideration of this question I am honored that this was a question you have asked.”
Recently I told a friend that “Ennea” could easily end up in my top 10 of 2024 female fronted metal albums. What do you expect from the press how they will respond to “Ennea”?
“Personally, I never expect anything from anyone. I can’t really speak for the other members of the band on this question. Music is subjective and people are entitled to constructive criticism, we appreciate all opinions and are always very pleased if it is received well by anyone. I am extremely chuffed that you think that highly of this album and it is my belief that the music we write is for the pleasure of all those who enjoy it, whoever they may be. Obviously we hope it will be well received from those who understand and appreciate melodic power metal.”
On your Facebook page it says: “Come over and join Lisa and the band on our Patreon page to be a part of this amazing journey throughout the release of album 3 and our journey toward the writing of album 4!” You’re already thinking about the next album with “Ennea” not even out yet?
“Absolutely! “Ennea” was ready for release some time ago, but un- fortunately circumstance has meant we have had to wait much longer than we had hoped for its release. This is not an issue for us, however, Constantine and I are continuously writing and discussing ideas and our fourth album is underway, and we think the concept is a great one with a thread running through from the previous 3 albums.”Will you release more singles and videos from “Ennea” or is it just going to be the album release from now on?
“We have released “Poseidon”, “Trickster” and recently “Nymphet” on YouTube with official videos and I hope everyone enjoys those. “Reina” has just been released via Wormhole- death as a lyric video and now we await the release of the album in its entirety.”We definitely want to see SORCERESS OF SIN live on the European mainland next year. Is that going to happen?
“We would absolutely love to play in Europe, as we think our music is suited to a more European metal style. We are currently in Spain in the hope of making some connections and are very open to any offers to play anywhere in Europe that would like to have us play!” ■
