Earlier this year, not even that long ago, UK cinematic djent band VANITAS released a 6-track EP titled “Chaos Theory”. Far from resting on their laurels, VANITAS look forward to the future and have already planned a new single release on November 15th, “Wait And See”. Well, we don’t want to wait, but we sure want to see what their new musical endeavour looks and sounds like. So we asked singer Jade Maris the 5 questions.
Questions by: Henk van Nieuwenhoven
The new single “Wait And See” will be out on November 15, not very long after the release of the “Chaos Theory” EP in August. Is it from the same writing session as the EP?
“No, actually “Wait And See” was written just after the EP release, so it was quite a quick turnaround for release.”
With such a title, “Wait And See”, one would of course like to know: wait and see for what? So please, do tell us.
““Wait And See” is about the excitement of waiting to see what the future holds, but also the anxiety of not knowing what the future holds. What’s around the corner? Is it good or bad? You’ve got to trust the process and “Wait And See”!”
Your vocals on “Wait And See” are harsh in the verses and clean and poppy in the chorus. Is that the cinematic djent that you speak of in the press release?
“It’s all part of it! We use the term cinematic djent to describe both our love of progressive metal and djenty riffs with big epic cinematic orchestra in our music, so we like to make sure the vocals are just as dynamic too!”
Also in the same press release you say that “Wait And See” is “an epic anthem, exploring the duality of excitement and anxiety of trusting an unknown future.” Can you say a little more about that?
“As I mentioned in the previous question, I wrote the lyrics for “Wait And See” not long after our EP release. We had really grown as a band and lots of exciting things were happening for us. And I felt that duality of the excitement that the future could bring for the future of the band, but also the pressure to continuously do more and do better and the anxiety of the unknown.”
Please, share something from the official music video that will also be out on November 15 that we should know or pay attention to. Anything at all to satisfy our curiosity.
“Look out for the horse!” ■
